Pregnancy by Age

Pregnancy can seem daunting at first glance, especially if it’s an unplanned or teen pregnancy. You’re not alone. No matter how old you are, there’s support available.

With the 2022 Supreme Court ruling to overturn Roe v. Wade, abortion is now illegal in Texas. That may impact your pregnancy decision, but we’re here to help with whatever comes next.

Pregnancy by Ages 13-15

Teenage pregnancy, especially between the ages of 13 and 15, may feel like your life has been turned upside down. It can leave you uncertain about your future. Know that you are not the first pregnant teen and you won’t be the last either. Right now, it’s about figuring out your best path forward.

No two pregnancies are exactly the same. But these five initial steps can give you a place to start:

  • Step 1: Talk to your parents or another trusted adult.

  • Step 2: Schedule a doctor’s appointment.

  • Step 3: Receive pregnancy counseling.

  • Step 4: Determine the best path forward for you.

  • Step 5: Contact a professional that can help you with what comes next.

Becoming pregnant at such a young age can bring up circumstances you may not have even thought about yet. You may have just entered puberty, and you likely still rely on your parents to provide food, shelter and support.

As someone in or close to being in high school, there are the normal challenges of being a teenager. If you still rely on your parents for basic needs, then you’ll need a significant amount of help to even think about being a parent yourself.

Abortion is now illegal in Texas. Parenting is an immense responsibility for someone at your age, but there’s also the option of adoption.

Adoption is a brave, selfless decision that creates a brighter future for all parties involved. Choosing adoption means:

  • A loving family for your baby

  • A brighter future for you and your baby

  • Help with rent and bills

When you work with a reputable adoption agency like ours, you’ll get all the support you need.

That’s why adoption with us is 100% free for you. Adoption is a big enough decision as it is, so finances should be the least of your worries.

Pregnancy by Ages 16-18

Teenage pregnancy requires a lot of support. Having a strong support system is vital. It’s absolutely possible to raise a child as a single parent. But that doesn’t mean it’s easy, either.

Many teenagers who become pregnant don’t have serious, long-term relationships with the baby’s father. In addition to the shared responsibility and emotional support the baby’s father can provide, it also impacts factors like food, shelter and medical support.

All of these factors cost money. If you’re pregnant between the ages of 16 and 18 and considering parenting or adoption, then money is a big factor. Having a job during high school is common. It’s an introduction to the adult world, allowing you to gain real-world experience and compensation.

Pregnancy discrimination is against the law in the U.S. and is protected by federal and state laws.

Your right to work as a pregnant teenager in Texas means businesses with 15 or more employees can’t discriminate against you because of your pregnancy. They have to provide reasonable accommodations for disabilities.  Pregnancy doesn’t qualify as a disability but pregnancy-related complications do.

Another state law that protects your rights means Texas municipal and county employers have to make reasonable efforts to accommodate the physical restrictions that come with pregnancy.

If you’ve been discriminated against in Texas because of your pregnancy, then you can file a discrimination charge with the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission.

Pregnancy by Ages 19-21

At this point, you’re transitioning to adult life, whether that is college or a career. These questions can help you determine what’s best for you:

Will Raising a Child Affect My Goals for the Future?

This all depends on where you’re at in your life, personally and professionally. If you’re continuing your education in college, then having a baby will affect that timeline and how you’re able to balance school work and parenting.

College is a natural step up from high school. You may be learning more specifically about what you want to do career-wise, but it’s undoubtedly more difficult than high school.

It’s not impossible, but reaching goals educationally or professionally will be affected by parenthood.

Do You Want to Become A Mother at This Point?

Not all women want to be parents. That’s OK and completely normal. You could change your mind down the road, too, but focusing on your education and career may be your biggest priorities right now.

If that’s the case, then adoption is always an option. Adoption is a loving decision that puts the best interests of your baby first.

Choosing adoption can help keep you on track to reach your goals. You'll also be able to find a loving, nurturing home for your baby with the perfect adoptive family.
